The latest study out of the University Virginia finds that rate of people with mental illness who suffer from chronic pain is at its highest levels ever.
"We found that people living with chronic pain, including those who have been diagnosed with one or more types of chronic pain, continue to use opioid drugs frequently, in amounts line with the recommended guidelines and higher than those without these diseases," said lead study author Michael D. Price, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry at UVA. "In addition, as people move into younger adulthood and are diagnosed with chronic pain, the number of people taking these drugs abuse or dependence increases, and the likelihood of developing a dependence on these drugs increases."
In the study, researchers surveyed 1,087 adults living with chronic pain and more than 2,000 individuals without that condition in the U.S. 1994 and 1999 to see how old people with depression, chronic pain or both are. They then analyzed the results four years later to look how many of the people with any three conditions were taking opioids.
Price and his co-author, Jody L. Garza, M.D., Ph.D., a professor and chairman of psychiatry behavioral sciences at UVA, said that by using nationally representative data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, they had a stable sample size to determine the age-related increase in use of these drugs among people with chronic conditions.
"To our knowledge, this is the largest population-based study to date that has found an increase in the prevalence of opioid dependence among pain patients between 2 and 4 years after they were first diagnosed with a chronic condition such as pain, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine's guidelines," said Dr. Garza.
Although they found that overall opioid use was stable during this four-year period, use was more widespread among people in their late teens and early 20s (35.9 percent of those between 15 and 19 years of age had used opioids in the prior month) and older than those in their mid-30s (26.8 percent of those older than 29 had taken opioids in the prior month), compared with people in their mid-30s.
Dr. Price said the findings are especially important because they may prevent future overdose deaths and avoid additional costs caused by illicit substances.
